Police top brass meet Surinamese counterparts

-as piracy probe continues 

As both countries continue to investigate last month’s brutal piracy attack, a delegation of top  officials from the Guyana Police Force (GPF) met with their Surinamese counterparts on Monday.

According to a release from the GPF , the team of four police officers from the Korps Politie Suriname (KPS) engaged the Commissioner of Police (ag) David Ramnarine , Assistant Commissioner(Law Enforcement) Paul Williams, Assistant Commissioner and Commander `B` Division, Lyndon Alves and other selected senior officers of the GPF  at the Commissioner`s Conference Room, Police Headquarters, Eve Leary.

“This engagement was in connection with ongoing investigations by both forces surrounding the piracy attacks that occurred on 27th April, 2018 and 3rd May, 2018 involving Guyanese fishermen and boats in Suriname,” the police said in a  release. The Surinamese team is expected to leave on Tuesday .

During the visit the team will be engaging with senior investigators from the Criminal Investigation Department and intelligence officers.

The visiting team from the KPS comprises of Acting Head Department Major Crimes, Senior Superintendent Roberto Prade, Chief Investigation Department, Superintendent Erwin Dort, Acting Chief International Affairs, Deputy Superintendent Bryan Isaacs and Detective Sergeant Jayant Somai.

Four vessels with 20 fishermen aboard who were brutally attacked by a band of pirates in Surinamese waters on April 27.

Only five of the 20 fishermen have survived the attack so far, the bodies of four have washed up onshore while 11 are feared dead.
Authorities in both Guyana and Suriname have arrested a number of persons in connection with the attack, as they intensify their investigations.

They have been closely following several persons who were identified as suspects, and believe that it is just a matter of time before all the perpetrators are caught and placed before the courts.
