Young Global Leaders (YGLs) spend four days with refugees in Kakuma camp and Kalobeyei settlement: 14 members drawn from the forum of Young Global Leaders conducted a four-day Kakuma Impact Expedition to explore the complex realities of refugee and camp life by splitting into seven work-streams, each examining a topic from a systems-approach. These streams aimed to spur YGLs to develop, independently and collectively, an actionable vision and plan to improve lives in Kakuma and those of displaced populations in other parts of the world. A first of its kind CRRF workshop held in Kakuma: UNHCR Sub Office Kakuma hosted the first Consultations on the operarisational and implementation of the Comprehensive Refugee Response Framework (CRRF) that brought together the national and county governments, donors, private sector, UNHCR and partners and refugees.

President of Swiss Confederate visits Kakuma Refugee Camp: The President of the Swiss Confederate, H.E. Alain Berset, accompanied by Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Health, Mrs. Sicily Kariuki and Turkana County Governor H.E. Josephat Nanok, visited Kakuma camp and Kalobeyei settlement on 10 July 2018. During the one-day mission, the president visited UNHCR projects and Swiss supported projects implemented by SwissContact, where he met and interacted with various beneficiaries drawn from the refugee and host community.

Installation of a hybrid solar system enhances the provision of vital health support to refugee and host communities: The installation of a solar hybrid fuelsolar energy system in Kalobeyei ‘Super’ Health Centre (as it is commonly referred to), is an innovative and cost effective solution to utilise solar energy to provide power on a 24/7 basis. This is expected to cut costs and eventually result in better and a more efficient provision of health services for Kalobeyei residents. Refugee athletes from Kenya compete at world under-20s athletics championship in Finland: Two refugee athletes from South Sudan participated in the World Under-20s Athletics Championships in Tampere, Finland, which kicked off on July 10th. The athletes travelled to Finland to participate in the competition, organised by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), the world athletics body, and are competed under the IAAF flag. Renown Japanese architect, Shigeru Ban, visits Kakuma: Renown Japanese architect and winner of Pritzker Prize, Shigeru Ban, on 23 July visited Kalobeyei Settlement to examine a range of structures, from his designs, that had been completed. UNHCR supports the voluntary return of Burundi refugees: On 4 July 2018, the Government of Kenya and Burundi, together with UNHCR officially flagged of the voluntary repatriation of Burundian refugees from Kakuma. Thus far, 191 individuals have been assisted to return to Burundi from Kakuma, Kenya, though VolRep programme.

Cash Based Interventions: UNHCR Kakuma continue the successful rollout of the CBI for shelter program. In addition, the Office has completed plans to pilot CBI for Core Relief Items (CRIs) starting with soap and sanitary napkins; this will have a positive impact on enhancing the dignity of the POCs and also improve the economic situation in the area through the injection of cash in the local markets.
