Newcastle fans have been left staggered after Rafa Benitez revealed the club were happy to allow him to manage Spain in this summer’s World Cup.

Speaking to the media in Ireland earlier this month, Benitez revealed that Spain had contacted him about taking the job on a temporary basis for the World Cup and he said Newcastle were prepared to allow him to take it before returning to manage the Magpies for the 2018/19 campaign.

The club’s hierarchy felt it was a move that would be positive for all parties but Newcastle fans strongly disagree, taking to social media to express their disbelief.

NUFC Threat Level tweeted: “ Newcastle United were willing to let Rafa manage Spain at the World Cup?

“How much is the massive distraction from pre-season planning at our club worth?

“The temptation of taking over as Spanish manager would be huge if it went remotely well. They were willing to let this happen.”

Alan Coleman added: “I don’t know which loan ‘possibility’ I am more surprised about. The attempt to sign WBA’s striker they’re trying to flog for £16.5m, on loan, when he has 12 months left on his contract, or our willingness to loan Rafa to Spain for a few weeks, because it might be good for NUFC.”

Shaun Grey argued: “Ashley was probably hoping he could use Rafa’s time away with Spain as a excuse for lack of transfers.”

Harry De Cosemo continued: “Begs the question why Ashley even wanted to get Rafa in the first place if there was no long-term plan. Allowing him to take over Spain for the WC was a ridiculous move. He says he never wants relegation again but risks it every chance he gets.”

While Hanoi Toon pondered: “Perhaps the ideal scenario being that Rafa did well - Spain wanted him to stay on and (drum roll) compensation could be discussed. Like any player - they don’t want to lose Rafa ‘on a free’.”
